820 Red Horse Squadron Annual Holiday Party

Red Horse Booster Club

The 820th RED HORSE Squadron is one of four active duty RED HORSE Squadrons and is located at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, reporting directly to the 12th Air Force (Air Forces Southern) Commander.  It is a self-sufficient, 404-person civil engineer and logistics unit capable of providing rapid response and independent operations in remote, high-threat environments to support worldwide contingencies and special operations.

The 820th RHS provides full-spectrum construction capabilities with equipment.  RED HORSE Airmen blend multi-skilled engineering, vehicle maintenance, services, material management, security forces, and medical personnel to provide heavy construction and repair capability to the theater Air Component Commander.

RED HORSE Squadrons have worldwide responsibilities and can support any conventional weapon system within the built environment. Major wartime and disaster response capabilities include a rapidly deployable, fully-armed, self-sufficient civil engineering unit capable of performing personnel or weapons systems bed-down, and repair heavily damaged facilities and infrastructure systems.

RED HORSE troop training projects assist base construction efforts while honing wartime responsibilities and proficiencies.  RED HORSE possesses cradle-to-grave design-build capability, to include site surveying, design, planning, procurement, and construction. Typical projects include vertical and horizontal construction, such as K-Span construction, pre-engineered buildings, concrete masonry unit block construction, and large scale concrete and asphalt pavements.

The 820th RHS is responsible for training all 15 Active, Guard, and Reserve RED HORSE units in special engineering capabilities.  The highly motivated training section is responsible for instructing RED HORSE Airmen across the force in each of these special capability areas: explosive demolition, quarry operations, water-well drilling, materials testing, concrete plant operations, concrete mobile batching operations, concrete placement, asphalt milling and paving operations, and asphalt plant operations.  Newly added to the 820th RHS training mission is mobile crane operation training for all Civil Engineering units across the Air Force. It is the only Air Force location that provides a civilian operators certification.  Additionally, the unit possesses other special capabilities such as aircraft arresting system installation, expedient facility erection with the use of the K-Span machine and Frame CAD.

The 820th RHS provides rapid response to continuing missions and emerging threats that arise around the globe.  Combatant Commanders expect RED HORSE to provide expedient engineering, airfield and facility capability assessments, and repairs to damaged infrastructure.  This type of mobility and flexibility allows for follow-on forces and materiel resources to establish airfield contingency operations and force bed-down anywhere, any time.  This is what makes the 820th RHS unit the premier military construction force of choice.

They are actively involved in the community with events such as Muscular Distrophy Association, Meals for Vets, Three Square Food Bank, and Angel Tree programs. The organization hosts an annual Holiday Party to honor those commitments and to show support for those leaving or returning from deployments.

Boys & Girls Club of Greater Anaheim-Cypress

Boys & Girls Club of Greater Anaheim-Cypress
We believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. We believe that a safe and loving environment for children will enable them to realize their full potential, and become productive, caring, responsible citizens. In every community, boys and girls are left to find their own recreation and companionship in the streets. An increasing number of children are at home with no adult care or supervision. Young people need to know that someone cares about them. Boys & Girls Clubs offer that and more. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. Boys & Girls Clubs are a safe place to learn and grow – all while having fun. It is the place where great futures are started each and every day.

YO Court

The focus for this specialty drug court is on those defendants between the ages of 18 and 24, young offenders (YO), and requires family support and participation. The program was launched in July 2010 and follows an intensive supervision drug court model with a focus on family treatment. This team has found a formula that is successful with the drug court defendants, especially with young offenders. YO Court mandates frequent court status checks, substance abuse treatment, community service activities, random drug testing, life skill classes, homework assignments and family involvement.

YO Court comprises a team of specialists, treatment providers, attorneys, house arrest officers and other community providers who work with the defendants to obtain and maintain sobriety. Over the course of the one-year program, defendants must demonstrate responsibility for their drug and alcohol problems and negative life choices.

Henry’s Place

Henrys Place

Before making the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, Sergeant Henry Prendes dreamed of establishing a summer camp for inner-city youth. The fulfillment of that dream, Henry’s Place, will be much more than just a “fun summer camp”. Their goal is to provide life-changing experiences, instruction, and opportunities to at-risk and underprivileged children and youth — experiences that will equip them to succeed in facing the challenges of growing up in the inner- city.

Mendoza Elementary School

JUDGE JOHN MENDOZA Native Las Vegan, retired former Clark County District Judge John F. Mendoza, 83, of Las Vegas, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, after a brief illness. Born Jan. 13, 1928, in Las Vegas, Mendoza’s storied life included being the captain of the Las Vegas High School Dream Team of ’44 football squad. A tough running back, he led the Wildcats to eight consecutive victories before the team trounced Sparks 19-0 in the championship game. Yet another impressive statistic was the fact that the Wildcats never allowed successive first downs. In addition, no team was able to score against the team. The team drew capacity crowds at Butcher Field in downtown Las Vegas, while also setting another high standard with a long list of players who eventually entered the legal profession. The Wildcats’ team was inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame in April of this year. Mendoza served in the U.S. Army and attended the University of Notre Dame on a football scholarship. He graduated Juris Doctorate, cum laude from Notre Dame in 1951. Mendoza served as Clark County Deputy District Attorney from 1951-55. He was Justice of the Peace for Las Vegas Township from 1955-57 before being named North Las Vegas City Attorney from 1958-59. Mendoza was elected Clark County District Attorney in 1960, serving in the position until 1962. He was also a partner in the law firm of Mendoza Foley & Garner from 1957-66. Mendoza was elected District Court Judge of the Eighth Judicial District for Nevada in 1966, where he served until 1990. He specialized in juvenile justice from 1969-1984, was president of the Latin Chamber of Commerce from 1990-1992 and joined his wife, Eva Garcia Mendoza, as a partner with Mendoza Garcia Mendoza. He was also chairman of the Nevada Public Service Commission (PSC) from 1992-1998, being appointed chairman of the newly formed Transportation Service Authority from 1998-2000. Other professional positions included serving as president of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and serving as national director and president of the Las Vegas “Aid to Adoption of Special Kids” (AASK). Mendoza was co-founder of the Court Appointed Special Advocate Program (CASA) which was named in the Congressional Record by U.S. Senator Harry Reid Sept. 28, 2010. A school – John F. Mendoza Elementary – was opened in his honor in 1990. Survivors include his wife, Eva Garcia Mendoza; daughters, Donna Mitchell (Greg), Francisca Martinet (Bill), Victoria Mendoza, and Jahnann Pepple (Jeff); and son, John Jr.; his former wife, Ruby; and stepchildren Teresa Toplak (Paul), Christina Greene and Aaron Greene; and eight grandchildren.
