Red Rock Search & Rescue 5K

Founded in 2012 when hiker Ron Kirk went missing in Calico Basin, Red Rock SAR formed to help families search for their missing and lost loved ones. A non-profit made up of approximately 200 highly skilled and trained volunteers from all walks of life, such as retired military, paramedics, off duty police officers, firefighters, and people with a heart for giving back to their community. They train to deploy in all types of weather and terrain, from 100 degree dry deserts to frozen mountains and urban neighborhoods. They are on standby 24/7/365 to assist families who need their help, free of charge!

Red Rock SAR assists families and local agencies by providing manpower to search for missing or lost loved ones any time of the day or night. All of their volunteers are trained to be NASAR certified search technicians, and also receive training in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. Their Command Post personnel run an emergency operations center during all call outs, and their Command Staff train to FEMA standards of Incident Command Management.

Red Rock Search and Rescue is funded solely by the generous donations of corporations, local businesses, and members of the community.

Members come together to take their 4×4’s out on the many trails around Vegas and surrounding areas. Most runs are arranged by an individual club member, but they also have an annual club event designed to attract out-of-state 4×4’ers, and it’s called the Hump ‘N’ Bump. It is held in Logandale, Nevada, which is approx 45 miles outside of Las Vegas. The dates for this event normally fall on the 1st weekend of November each year.

Las Vegas Natural History Museum

The founding of the Las Vegas Natural History Museum stemmed from the realization of a tremendous need in the community for a museum promoting an appreciation and understanding of global life forms, past and present.

In February 1989, a small group of concerned citizens requested that the Las Vegas City Council assist in finding a home for a pre-existing collection of wildlife and prehistoric exhibits. The City of Las Vegas purchased a building, located in the center of a proposed Cultural Corridor, to house the Museum. This building is leased for one dollar a year; however, the museum is responsible for renovations, upkeep, and operations.

With the assistance of local businesses and private individuals, the Las Vegas Natural History Museum opened its doors in July 1991, exhibiting a varied collection of wildlife and prehistoric exhibits on loan. Since then, the Museum has obtained its own multi-million dollar, world-class collection, and created an exciting and interactive learning experience.

From the desert to the ocean, from Nevada to Africa, from prehistoric times to the present, the Las Vegas Natural History Museum takes young and old alike on a learning adventure around the world.

Discovery Children’s Museum

Discovery Children't Museum

Prior to opening its doors in a new location at Symphony Park and with a new name, the DISCOVERY Children’s Museum, Lied Discovery Children’s Museum was located in the historic Cultural Corridor in Downtown Las Vegas. The museum’s co-founders, Robin Greenspun and Mark Tratos, arranged a partnership between the Junior League of Las Vegas and the Allied Arts Council founding a private, nonprofit educational institution in 1984. A bond issue authorizing the building of the Las Vegas-Clark County Library and Discovery Museum in 1985 gave the museum a permanent home, which opened its doors to the public on September 9, 1990.

Over the years, the museum developed into a critical community asset that complemented and enhanced the educational experience of the children living in Southern Nevada and was regularly recognized for award-winning exhibits and programs. More than 2.2 million children and adults visited the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum.

Realizing a years-long relocation plan, the new museum opened March 9, 2013 in the Donald W. Reynolds Discovery Center adjacent to The Smith Center in Symphony Park. Much more than just the relocation of the current museum, the new museum helps redefine Las Vegas as a city that values culture and the arts, an urban lifestyle and, most importantly, its children. Three-stories tall in stature, the DISCOVERY Children’s Museum 58,000-square-foot building is home to nine-themed exhibition halls totaling 26,000 square feet of interactive hands-on core exhibits. The 5,000 square foot Featured Exhibitions Gallery is large enough to accommodate major exhibits from the nation’s leading museums. The new location is a safe, easily accessible, family-oriented and energetic educational destination that offers visitors extraordinary learning experiences and enhanced school, public and extended programs.
